The Future of Enterprise Architecture

Writer: Marijan MarencicMarijan Marencic

Currently, we are witnessing the rapid development and implementation of artificial intelligence across all areas of human activity. It is natural to wonder how the development of artificial intelligence will impact the field of Enterprise Architecture (EA). Two fundamental questions arise:

1. Will Enterprise Architecture disappear as a discipline?

2. Will AI replace Enterprise architects and their tools?

Will Enterprise Architecture Disappear as a Discipline?

Based on many years of experience in the application of EA, our predictions of this impact are as follows:

Enterprise Architecture (EA) will still be needed, as it represents a theoretical framework (TOGAF) on how to comprehensively describe business and how to make the necessary changes to improve the business. We do not expect any changes in the theoretical framework or ADM methodology

What will certainly need to be changed are business models, which will now include AI business agents. It will be necessary to update the ArchiMate notation with the concepts that will represent the AI agents and their relationship with other concepts developed so far.

We can conclude that Enterprise Architecture will not disappear, because the need for business design is related to the existence of business itself, regardless of whether it takes place with or without built-in AI agents.

The incorporation of artificial intelligence agents into businesses will enhance their capabilities, sometimes radically. Companies will experience increased automation, with AI agents performing tasks that previously required human labor.

Will AI Replace Enterprise Architects and Their Tools?

We expect AI agents to be integrated into Enterprise Architecture tools. Observing the development of these tools, it is evident that this trend is present across all companies producing them.

The implementation of AI agents will enable more efficient work of Enterprise architects. AI-based automation will enable the creation of business models from text descriptions or similar model templates.

Enterprise architects will be tasked with defining the business description for model generation and refining the model in areas where the AI has not performed adequately. In this way the creation of business models will be much faster and easier. Additionally, more automation of individual activities will be built into the tools to aid efficient business modeling

What still remains in the human domain (architects and business experts) is the creation of ideas for changing or transforming the business.

In the near future, artificial intelligence will be able to propose business transformation ideas based on existing models. However, for the creation of entirely new and previously undefined models, human input will still be essential

Enterprise architects and their cognitive abilities will continue to be the most important resource for the execution of business modelling tasks and creating ideas for transformation, now and in the future, regardless of the stages of development of artificial intelligence.

We can conclude that artificial intelligence will not replace Enterprise architects, but that it will improve design tools, what will have high impact on reducing a time for design and realization of business transformation projects
